Muskoka was hawt...
Just a quick blog before I clean up and take a nap. I finish Muskoka Long Course (2 km swim/55 km bike/15 km run) about 4 hours ago. One word...HAWT. It ain't hot. It is HAWT. It is about 32* C (90*F).
Good:
- prep, first one there at transition and set up
- pacing, HR did not go over 170 once
- good hydration in the run
- bike climbing, I passed numerous people grinding uphill
Bad:
- swim, zig zagging (at least i made it alive :D)
- T1, run too fast, was dizzy getting out of the wetsuit
- lower back hurts in the first 10 min in the bike (suspect bike too hard off the bat)
- run broke down in the last few km (12-14), had to resorted to walking. This is all mental, not physical. Need to learn to run in the heat.
Here is roughly the time:
Swim: 45 min
T1: 3-4 min
Bike: 110 min
T2: 2 min (probably under)
Run: 99 min
Total: 260 min or 4 hr 20 min
My next race is 1/2 Peterborough Ironman. It is on July 9 and coming down fast. Goal is to have one week focus training and taper off.
Have a happy Father's day (to all the fathers out there). I gotta be a good son and help clean up the house.

That's still some great training mileage! Well done!!!
Fantastic!! I looked up your results and thought you did awesome!!
Sounds so exciting!!
Incredible you didn't go higher than 170 being that hot!!
Next race is too close, go on, go on!!
Great job, Cliff.
Way to get it done in the heat!
Nice race! You must be feeling great about your IM coming up.
*high five*
yeeeaaaaaah!
Right on Cliff! Don't stress too much about walking on the run...we all do it at some point. I'm like you, I end up melting in the heat. Onward to Peterborough!
Go Cliff! Sounds like a great race!
Good race man! Solid!
Hope you had fun.
Nice job, Cliff! The heat is rough! Everyone slows down in the heat! You did great considering your average temp where you live is just slightly warmer than it is at the north pole. :)
dang, good job Cilff. Looks like your T2 times were really good. Was definitely a hot day out.
Come on guys and gals, 32C 90F is hot? That's just another day in Singapore... and don't forget the 80-90% humidity. :D
Can you pass on that "clean the house" tip to my boys please?
Solid race! It's brutal going long in that heat.
Awesome job at your race- and good luck at your 1/2 IM! Keep training great!
Very awesome Cliff! Despite the weather coniditions you pulled through very strong!
The heat will make your heartrate and the effort higher than normal. In all, a good preparation for the 1/2 coming up. You'll be satisfied you had these conditions this time in case they appear again 8)
Great job to finish, Cliff. In that kind of heat all bets are off as far as pacing goes. As long as you keep moving forward, you're doing well.
Congrats, Cliff!! That sounds like great times to me.
And 90 degrees IS HAWT!!
the heat will get you...your times are good. i have to walk sometimes too. don't sweat the small stuff cliff, that was a great race :D
Wow! Fantastic. It takes several weeks to acclimate to the heat and it will always sap you. I know from training in St. Louis! That's quite a race. By the way, there's nothing wrong with walking!
Congrats, Cliff.
Regarding your comment on low back pain first 10 min. of bike: it's probably not from biking too hard. Sometimes when we wear a wetsuit, we get a tad lazy in our swimming body position, and we end up hyperextending our back. It's easy to do in a wetsuit. So you might want to try a gentle toe touch stretch in T1 before you saddle up on your bike and also make a conscious effort to curve OUT your low back on the bike for a few minutes as you start pedaling.
Great job!!!! Those are awesome results!!
