Cliff's Ultimate Ironman Diet

Most Ironman lasts from 12-16 hours. Proper nutrition is crucial. This is not my original ideas. I have only recently stumble upon them. I don't think even the pros are doing it. I can't imagine how fast they can go if they realize what I about to show you guys.

Before I get started, let's get the disclaimer out of the way.

Fat has more energy than carbs or protien. One pound of fat yields 3,500 calories. Since the bike is the longest leg in Ironman, it makes sense to consume the most amount of calories during that leg. The question becomes where do we store on nutrition on our bike? Fortunately, with some creative thinking, there are many places to store the extra fat that you need on the bike trip.

Here is a six inch sub.
The sub is whopping with fat.

It is a steak sub with cheese and mayonaise (i asked to add extra mayonaise on it). By putting the six inch sub into the tennis balls holder, I am able to eat this bad boy whenever I needed. It also has protien and carbs. A perfect snack for those long hours on the bike.

With the popularity of Ironman, Pringles also jump on the wagon. Their package fits convinently into a bike cage? Conincidence? I think not. Also with their high salt content, you don't have to worry about your electrolytes.

As you can see from this pic, the fatty goodies fit nicely in the bike cages. Now whenever you feel that you are running low on fat, you know where to get your fix.
For someone who has a sweet tooth and want some fatty stuff, the perfect solution....Cadbury eggs. Put them on your bento box and they are ready to go.
This one for you, Nytro.

Lastly, of course. Hydration is an issue. Besides you need something to wash it down with right? Beer. Not only do they pack with lots of carbs, they also have some trances of potassium.
Drink Responsibly. Ride Responsibly

Note: My dentist pull an April Fool on me today. I suppose to go for two root canal. He told me I needed three. Ha... I wish the third one was free...but whatever it is done. :) Next step..clean teeth, crown and implant.
Note note: A beer and some Cadbury eggs got consumed in the process. :)

Cliff,
As the Guinness guys say...BRILLIANT!!! SIMPLY BRILLIANT!!

Don't tempt me though! So far for 2006 I'm still 99% clean with foods. Did I mention I quit alcohol on Jan. 1st? Sacrafices, I know. You've gotta do what you've gotta do.

That is AWESOME! Random fact: I used to work for the company that coined "Drink Responsibly. Drive Responsibly." Love the adaptation!

Cliff,
That was hilarious...I'm hoping it was a joke right?!right? Cliff? ;-)

Seriously though, it is pretty amazing what people put into their special needs bags for the bike / run during Ironman..I gotta admit I've been guilty myself packing all kinds of crap to cover any type of craving I might have. Good call on the pringles though..you definitely want to have some SALTY stuff in your bags after downing sweet drinks / gels all day!

The sub in the tennis ball chute tops it! :D

You guys are so lucky to have twist top bottles in the USA, I will have to dangle a bottle cap opener somewhere off my bike. Wonder if Park Tools makes one...

Yup sub in the Tennis Ball Tube is the best idea yet. Maybe subway would let you be in one of their commercials with that one. I could just see it.....lol.

I'll try it out on my next ride. Thanks for the tips. Sounds like a real breakthrough.

Any tips for nutrition for marathon runners? I don't think the pringles container will fit in my fuel belt ^^

cliff... you're a genius. i loved the subway in the tennis ball tube. and the pringles... QUAL-I-TEE. the cadbury eggs also fit nicely in the pockets of my jacket...not that i've ever ridden with those in there... no siree. i'm a serious triathlete. i wouldn't succumb to temptation. okay.. maybe once. or twice.

btw, i hope u stocked up on those cadbury eggs, because they are only available until easter!!

Oh gosh, Cliff! You are TOO funny! Bart is a bad influence, so I thought. Now, I realize you are a bad influence on homey. Remember the day after Easter, you can stock on on the eggs and freeze them....or better yet, go but your own cadbury bunny-- I hear there is a breeding farm for cadbury bunnies somewhere in the Midlands of England. Worcestershire, I think. Google it.

BTW: I shoudln't even havt to mention this, but That should have been "buy" your own Cadbury Bunny. I was not being sick.... I am just a very poor typist. Even when I do my blog posts, I have to go back too mant times to correct typos...my spell check doesn't work on blogger. :( Don't know why.

PS: Might want to use mustard or skip the mayo...might go bad sitting inside the tennis ball chute for that long and no refrigeration. :)
